Venture Development Corporation (February, 2002) "Green Hills has turned its attention to becoming a total solution provider. As VDC reported last year, Green Hills' business is now more heavily weighted to the OS and bundled tools side where the company has been very successful with its INTEGRITY OS." "In 2001, Green Hills Software made a major move into the embedded OS space, positioning the company as an embedded software solution provider that addresses both deeply embedded and high-availability applications." "In 2001, the DOD awarded the estimated $200 billion F-35 Joint Strike Fighter to Lockheed Martin, where Green Hills has been selected to provide the INTEGRITY OS and software development tools for avionics software to operate on airborne PPC processors." "In particular, the defense community is concerned about security, both in terms of system reliability and protection from external threat. Terrorism and international espionage pose threats to networked systems that demand the utmost in defense. The real-time operating system is in the best position to apply the final line of defense against such threats to our embedded systems as virus, hacker, and sabotage." "[VDC predicts] increasing demand from OEMs for OS vendors with royalty-free business models, and increased demand for embedded solutions in the military/aerospace, consumer electronics, and automotive markets." Electronic Market Forecasters, Inc., 2001 Report "Only Green Hills offers this combination [Royalty-Free RTOS products with Comprehensive Tools], which is essential for development of high-volume, Internet Appliances and Consumer Electronics, such as Ink-jet Printers." "The demand for royalty-free RTOS products will become extreme, with royalty-bearing RTOSes forced out of use." "In general, only Wind River Systems offers a comprehensive solution that matches that of Green Hills, and even Wind River doesn't match all of the capabilities of Green Hills' products." "Developers will spend more and more of their development budgets on tools that get them to market faster, and reduce latent defects in their fielded products." Needham & Company, August, 2001" [Wind River] earlier this year lost the Hewlett-Packard account, to which it supplies its RTOS for HP's printers, to privately held Green Hills Software. We believe the primary reason for this was Green Hills' royalty free RTOS. We believe this loss represents approximately $5 million in annual lost royalties for WIND. We believe there could be other instances of competitive losses lurking out there as well, especially with customers who intend to ship large volumes of end products. Customers seek to minimize costs, especially during a slow-down in the economy, and one way to do this is to purchase a royalty free RTOS." |
