| Routing Information Protocol - next generation (RIPng) |
 |
Overview |
One of the most widely used interior gateway protocols is the Routing Information Protocol (RIP). RIPng (Routing Information Protocol - next generation) is an IPv6 implementation of this distance-vector, or Bellman-Ford, routing
protocol for local networks. RIPng is based on the RIP protocol and inherits the limitations and constraints that are
in RIP.
This RIPng functionality includes a separate RIB for the IPv6 address family, ICMP for IPv6, and IPv6 neighbor discovery.
As with all Green Hills routing products, the IPv6 family of protocols strikes the perfect balance between richness of
features and the safety of deployed code that's working in the Internet today. The original GateD IPv6 routing protocols have been shipping since 1997. And like the IPv4 unicast routing protocols, all of the IPv6 protocols are fully
tested for conformance and interoperability. |
Applications |
The Green Hills RIPng protocol is widely deployed in modest size networks in commercial, military, banking, and enterprise networks. RIPng supports light weight dynamic routing across a variety of physical topologies such as
Ethernet or serial links.
Green Hills RIPng is ready for secure routing applications integrated with the Green Hills secure INTEGRITY operating system, flexible RIPng sending policy, rich policy filters and TCP MD5 authentication per peer. RIPng can operate as listen-only, send-only or send and receive routes. These settings (send-only, receive-only, send & receive) can be set
on a per interface basis.
Green Hills RIPng contains an extensive policy engine that allows network operators to tailor RIPng networks to specific network connectivity and traffic patterns. With this policy engine, the network operator can restrict the routes
passed in RIPng. The Green Hills GateD policy engine supports network access lists, network prefix lists, and the TCP
MD5 authentication is set on a per neighbor basis for IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. |
Key Features |
Green Hills RIPng supports a full featured RIPng protocol implementation with an extensive policy suite. This full featured implementation supports enhanced targeted route redistribution for advanced control of RIPng routes, advanced RIPng routing features, and flexible routing timers.
The enhanced Green Hills GateD RIPng route distribution features have three types: protocol enhancements, policy filter enhancements, and route distribution capabilities. The Green Hills GateD RIPng supports the protocols’ ability to send routes on a per interface basis in the listen-only mode (no-send command), send-only command (noreceive command), and send/receive mode (normal mode).
The policy filter enhancements allow filter of routes based on interface, RIPng peer, or the route prefix. The extensive
policy engine allows flexible combinations of filters on interface, peer, or routes (prefixes).
RIPng may redistribute static and other dynamic routing protocols (OSPF, BGP).
The Green Hills RIPng also contains unique routing features to enhance the security of the RIPng protocol by using Unicast transmission of RIPng routing information. The source-gateway and trusted-gateway commands allow the complete control of what peers can send or receive information from GateD. This enhancement to allow Unicast transmission of RIPng protocol traffic avoids broadcasting RIPng routing information to a broadcast or multicast group.
Lastly, the RIPng provides the ability to allow flexible time periods for the RIPng updates. |
Key Benefits |
The Green Hills GateD RIPng protocol implementation is ready for secure routing with TCP MD5, easily configurable
send/receive functionality, Unicast transmission of RIPng protocol traffic, and an extensive policy engine.
This protocol implementation can support small deployments with listen-only RIPng or larger deployments with full
feature RIPng. The extensive policy configurations language allows network operators the ability to control the traffic
during any period of group. |
Supported Architectures |
GateD’s platform independent scalable software has been ported, tested and validated on Green Hills secure INTEGRITY operating system and GHNet IPv4/v6 router stack, providing end customers with a complete, functional
single-vendor solution.
